Gathering a professional network that includes peers and a mentor is a crucial first step. Personal brands should also be adjusted to showcase your new specialty.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For real estate agents hoping to eventually carve out a career in the luxury niche, assembling a professional network that includes peers – and, ideally, a mentor – is crucial in the meantime.

Once ready to make the move to the high end, they should adjust their personal brand to showcase their new specialty. While they can seek out opportunities to connect with affluent buyers and sellers at country clubs, fancy restaurants, and other local places, upscale listings are less plentiful overall.

It is not a bad idea, then, to team up with another agent, co-listing and co-marketing the first few properties while building a reputation.

The goal is to become known as a professional who is well-versed in all aspects of the local luxury market; discreet, especially when working with high-profile clients; and a capable communicator.

Having marketing and public relations experience also will appeal to prospective clients.

Importantly, high-end agents must play the part. It is important to consider who the clients are and to present as a reflection of their values, in terms of attire and comportment.
